Waikoloa Village, Hawaii

Nestled in the idyllic resort town of Waikoloa Village, on the Hawaiian Big Island, Shugart Wasse Workshop was tasked with designing a comprehensive transformation of this beachfront restaurant. The project entailed a ground-up remodel, featuring the addition of two brand-new structure: a charming hostess hut and an improved company administrative building. This ambitious endeavor aimed to not only enhance the overall aesthetics but also to elevate the functionality and guest experience of this beloved Hawaiian establishment.

Within the main restaurant structure, a meticulous reconfiguration of the space took place to maximize its use that creates an atmosphere of sophisticated yet leisurely comfort. The interior redesign was driven by the desire to optimize guest seating space, allowing more diners to enjoy the breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding paradise. The bar area, once tucked away to the side of the space, was artfully opened up to capture panoramic waterfront vistas, transforming it into a captivating focal point for patrons to unwind and savor their surroundings.

One of the most practical additions to this renovation was the introduction of the hostess hut. This charming structure not only serves as a welcoming point for guests but also plays a pivotal role in optimizing the restaurant’s functionality. By relocating the hostess station to this dedicated space, the main structure regained precious square footage for additional seating while simultaneously alleviating congestion for waiting patrons.

Beyond this functional purpose, the hostess hut also allowed for the creation of a small, inviting giftshop adjacent to the hostess station. Allowing diners to browse for unique souvenirs and mementos of their beachfront Hawaiian experience. At the back of the hut, a secondary day bar was established to cater to the grassy gaming area towards the rear of the complex. Providing a cozy spot for patrons to indulge in refreshments and take in picturesque views while they wait. The grassy gaming area, a favorite original feature from the restaurant, was carefully integrated into the new design. Maintaining the ability for waiting guests to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, from lawn games to lounging in the sun.
